The temperature characteristics of capacitance are an important basis for selecting the type of dielectric.

NPO, X7R, and Y5V dielectrics are commonly used Class II medium and high voltage multilayer ceramic capacitors in capacitors.

NPO dielectric (Class I)
  • It is the most commonly used single-chip ceramic capacitor with temperature compensation characteristics.
  • The electrical performance is the most stable and is basically not affected by temperature, voltage, and time changes.
  • The variation of capacity with frequency is less than ± 0.3 Δ C. Drift or lag less than ± 0.05%.
  • Often used in highly reliable and stable high-frequency and ultra-high frequency situations.
  • In these circuits, capacitors must be able to respond quickly and maintain stable performance to ensure the normal operation of the circuit. Due to its excellent stability and reliability, NPO capacitors have been widely used in communication, radar, satellites, and other highly reliable and stable applications

X7R dielectric (Class II)
  • The electrical performance is relatively stable, and there is no significant change in performance when temperature, voltage, and time change.
  • Suitable for isolation, coupling, bypass, and frequency discrimination circuits, with low requirements for capacity stability.
  • Due to its strong dielectric properties, capacitors with larger capacity NPO dielectric can be manufactured.

Y5V dielectric (Class III)
  • It has a high dielectric constant and is commonly used in the manufacturing of high-capacity capacitor products.
  • Being able to store more charges, thus having a larger capacity.
  • Capacity and loss are sensitive to testing conditions such as temperature and voltage. However, in appropriate application scenarios, Y5V capacitors are still an efficient and reliable capacitor material that can meet the needs of most conventional circuits.

Above, engineers can choose suitable and more cost-effective high-voltage ceramic capacitors based on different application scenarios.
